What is the role of a Local Development Volunteer?
Local Development Volunteers will be asked to contact their local authority on behalf of the BHA. They should enquire about the local structures dealing with diversity and equality and any projects dealing with social cohesion. They should then contact those structures and approach them as a possible member to represent humanists and non-religious people. In some cases it may not be appropriate to be a full member but being an advisor, contact point or observer could also be valuable. We see the work including:
- meetings within their locality
- being a representative on committees
- being a contact point for local consultations
- attending local events as a representative of the BHA
People often ask us how much time being a volunteer involves. This question is difficult to answer as it depends on the work available in your area. Some people give a couple of hours a week whereas others attend a meeting once every few months. The work is very flexible and it is up to each volunteer how much time they wish to give.
