BBC Consultation

What is happening?Take Action radio

The BBC are running a consultation on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 7. This is your chance to tell them what you think about their programming!

We want an end to the privileged status and position of religions and religious broadcasting by the BBC, and for some programmes about humanism or from a humanist perspective to be broadcast. In spite of legislation making clear that religions and beliefs, including non-religious beliefs such as Humanism, should be treated equally in terms of broadcasting, the BBC continues to resist doing so.

We want the BBC to fulfil its obligations and include Humanist programmes in its broadcasting!

What can be done?

You can find the consultation here and it is open until 26th August 10. Fill it in with your views about their programming!

You can find more information about the BHA’s work on broadcasting here.

There is one particularly relevant question within the survey:

Q4: Through its documentaries and factual programming Radio 4 should deepen and broaden audience understanding of a range of subjects such as business, finance, education, food, travel, religion and science. How well do you think Radio 4 does this?

Thought for the Day is a religious slot that, coming in the middle of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, obtrudes itself on the general listener.  It plainly proclaims that reflective thoughts on the events of the day can come only from people with "a faith". It is entirely unacceptable to exclude some speakers just because they are non-religious. BBC Radio 4’s Thought for the Day programme should include humanist perspectives or be scrapped. To continue to deny non-religious input in reflective thoughts is discriminatory and fails to broaden audience understanding of non-religious beliefs such as Humanism.
