BHA Briefing: Commons amendments to the Academies Bill

The Academies Bill has completed its passage through the House of Lords and had its Commons 2nd
Reading on Monday 19th July, with Committee days scheduled for Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd July.
A number of important issues were raised in relation to religious discrimination in the new “faith
Academies” that this Bill will create during 2nd Reading, with some key amendments being tabled
subsequently for discussion in Committee of the whole House. This briefing covers amendments 42 & 43,
on admissions policies in “faith Academies”, amendment 44 on the religious character of new Academies,
and amendment 26 on PSHE. The BHA strongly supports these amendments.
