| Start time | Doors open at 6pm Debate starts at 6.45pm |
The motion for the debate will be:
"Stop bashing Christians! Britain has become and anti-Christian society"
Britain is a Christian country. So why are we quick to support the rights of minority religions, while at the same time insisting that gold crosses are tucked in and mutterings of ʻHappy Christmasʼ are silenced?
Peter Hitchens – brother to the famously atheist Christopher – fears that without Christianity, we might end up undermining the whole foundation of law in this country. Journalist Matthew Parris wonders how intelligent people can still believe in God.
So are Christians victims of a hateful animus, or are they demanding special treatment in a secular state which in fact applies the law equally to all?
Speakers for the motion:
George Carey, Former Archbishop of Canterbury
Peter Hitchens, Author and Columnist
Howard Jacobson, Novelist and Journalist
Speakers against the motion:
Matther Parris, Columnist, Author and Broadcaster
