The British Humanist Association (BHA) today reacted with outrage to reports that a number of ‘gay exorcisms’ are taking place in the UK every year by Church leaders. The ceremonial 'cure' for homosexuality attempts to rid the victim of ‘demons’ and can be carried out on children as well as adults.

Pepper Harow, Local Campaigns Officer, stated, “The reports about these ‘exorcisms’ are deeply concerning, especially if children and vulnerable adults are involved or being coerced to take part in such activities. Any allegations of coercion, exploitation or harm caused by such activities should be investigated. In addition, it is highly insulting to lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals to suggest that homosexuality is a problem in need of a ‘cure’ in the first place. There is no place for such activity in 21st century Britain.”
 
“We have written to the government to ask if they are aware of these rituals, and whether they will be investigating and taking action about them.”
